加拿大华裔百人会组团考察Sto:lo第一民族历史文化

Dr.Keith Thor Carlson:
The Peace and Reconciliation Centre hosted a dinner last night to help build bridges of understanding between Canada’s Chinese community and Indigenous people. In attendance were representatives from the Canada Committee 100 Society (including it’s founding president Guo Ding, Richmond City councillor Chak Au, Kenny Gu, and others) and cultural leaders from the Sto:lo community including Sonny Mchalsie, Yakweakwioose Hereditary Chief Elaine Malloway, and Bibiana Norris.
The day started with the Canada Committee 100 Society going on a placename tour with Sonny. Then we gathered for dinner and Mr. Ding discussed how he and the rest of the Canada Committee 100 Society would like to find ways to build bridges and respectful relations with Indigenous communities and people. Chief Malloway shared that her family has Chinese ancestry dating back to the CPR construction of the 1880s when one of her Sto:lo ancestors had children with a Chinese railroad worker. And among other things there were discussions about how to assist her and her mother Mary try and find relatives in Guandong province.
Mr. Ding donated copies of his new book “Canada’s Chinese Gene” discussing Chinese Canadian history and culture, and then Kenny Gu presented Chief Malloway with a cheque for $1,000 for the cultural programs that the Sto:lo Research and Resource Management Centre runs on the Coqualeetza grounds, and Frank Zhu made a donation of masks and hand sanitizers for distribution as we try to keep people safe during the pandemic. Together we had many wonderful conversations and laid some solid groundwork for future relationships.
